Spring Cycles of Renewal:Into the Cradle of the Alchemist
Numerology 9 & The Fire Monkey
In this essay, we will look at the major cosmic cycles rebirthing us all this Spring, including Mars and Mercury Retrograde, as well as explore the larger themes symbolized by the Numerology of 2016, the number 9, and the Chinese Fire Monkey year.
♥ New Moon April 7 – 18 Aries
♥ Full Moon – April 22 – 2 Scorpio
♥ New Moon – May 6 – 16 degrees Taurus
♥ Full Moon – May 21 – 1 degree Sagittarius
♥ New Moon – 5th – 14 degrees Gemini
♥ Full Moon – 20th – 29 Sagittarius
Mars Retrograde in Sagittarius and Scorpio
Begins April 17 – 8 degrees Sagittarius,
end June 29 – 23 degrees Scorpio
Mars Retrograde will be one of our potent collective memories from the Spring of 2016.
Mars is our third chakra, the literal RAM seed syllable, the Ram of our Will center. During his retrograde, which occurs every two years, we confront our own desire and ask, “Why we do what we do?” We question our motivation. We reconsider all action, including our sexual drives, especially in the passionate signs of Scorpio and Sagittarius. Does power, control, and subtle manipulation still muddy our sexual energies or have we sipped the alchemical medicine and learned to transmute our erotic desires through Taoist, Tantric, and other sacred sexual practices?
And in our shamanic work, have we learned to harness the philosopher’s stone? Has our acrobatic dance upon Grandmother Spider’s web illuminated our Shadow enough to cleanse all cobwebs of the unconscious? And have our esoteric studies provided us the psychological insight that inspires a guiding, grounded, and fully embodied faith?
Especially poignant is Mars’ position between Sagittarius and Scorpio, in an area of the sky where another constellation dominates—The Serpent Bearer, Ophiuchus. Based on the Greek God of Healing, Asclepius, Ophiuchus is known as the 13th Constellation, since the Sun seemingly passes through this constellation for many weeks of the year.
Symbolically, this retrograde will force us to wrestle with the serpent nailed to the Tree of Life—our own kundalini spiraling through the three worlds of our consciousness—the Underworld, Middleworld, and Upperworld. During this time, the key to accomplishing what the alchemists called the Magnum Opus is our willingness to master transparent communication with self, with other, and with our Source.
Jupiter’s last months in Virgo add another spice to the cauldron of creation. With Mars he asks, “Are we projecting our Healer, our Teacher, our Shaman outside of ourselves, or is the Light of Christ-Consciousness reflecting back to us in the mirror each morning, in our simple daily practice, in our devotional sadhanas, in our compassionate service?” Are we integrating our ceremonies, our journeys, our travels on all levels—interdimensionally, psychically, and physically—or are we hedonistically seeking the next great adventure beyond without drinking the most potent of all medicines—Integration.
Those with planets in the first 12 degrees of the sign of Sagittarius and the last 12 degrees of Scorpio, as well as those with planets in the first 12 degrees of Gemini and the last twelve degrees of Taurus, will feel the most potent effects of this Mars Retrograde.

Numerology’s 9 Year – Let Go and Let God
Numerology’s Universal Year describes the umbrella themes for all of humanity in 2016. “Nine” is the terrain we travel this year, and this landscape is summarized in one word: SURRENDER. Since the 9 year is a the completion of a nine-year cycle which began in 2008, think back to what began then in your life and how it may be coming to completion, whether in career, relationship, home, or another core area of your life.
The 9 is a year of transition, preparing us all for a profound spark, an intense ignition of something brand new in 2017. But first we must fulfill our karma and allow the mirrors to instruct us on what resistances must be shed, on what patterns be transmuted, and what shadows must be consumed by the fire. Let go and Let God is the mantra in 2016.
Below are a few other themes to keep close to your heart in 2016’s dynamic year of change.
What must be released in the name of evolution?
Whereas Numerology’s Universal Year describes the major collective themes, your Personal Year portrays the motifs, circumstances, opportunities, and challenges you will address individually in a given year.
Calculate your Personal Numerology
The Personal Year is easily calculated. First, reduce the month and day of your birth, your birthday, to a single digit. Using a birthday for this example, April 8th, the single digit would be 3 (4+8=12; 1+2=3). If your month and day total comes to 11 or 22, the master numbers, in this instance, reduce the number to 2 and 4, respectively.
Now add the Universal Year to this: the 9. Uniquely, for this year, it will be the same as the first number you calculated, for every number added to 9 equals itself when reduced: e.g. 3 + 9 = 12; 1+ 2 = a 3 Personal Year.
The following is a list of keywords for all the Personal Years in 2016:
1 – A new beginning, a fresh 9 year cycle starts. Adventure, excitement, goal-setting, risk-taking, challenge, focus on the future, more solo time.
2 – Patience, cooperation, collaboration, relationship building, serious committed partnerships, emotional fluctuation, slow development, delay, support of another, non-aggressive action
3 – Social expansion, joy, optimistic opportunity, romance and love affairs, living life fully at the expense of scattered energies, creative fulfillment, frivolous/rash business decisions, less financial responsibility
4 – Hard work, slow, steady progress, dedicated, disciplined effort, self-control, reality check, organizational and administrative affairs, health and diet focus with less physical strength
5 – Dramatic change, quest for freedom, impulsive actions, limits transcended, travel, difficulty with responsibility and finance, fluctuating environments
6 – Domestic issues, family affairs, personal sacrifice for others, peaceful romance, accept a slower pace, harmony
7 – Introspection, study, reading, writing, contemplative reflection, internal analysis, reduce work responsibility and financial worry, clear thinking and mental assimilation, meditation, psychic/spiritual development, emotional detachment
8 – Power, achievement, recognition of efforts, ambition, important and influential networking, busy-ness, opportunism, exuding self-confidence, great gains or severe losses, reputation
9 – Completion of cycles, karmic cleansing, clearing old in relationship, career, home to prepare for the new, deep emotions, self-re-evaluation, more tolerance and compassion, humanitarian efforts, escapist desires
Spice it up with the Fire Monkey
The Chinese Fire Monkey year provides ample opportunities for innovative spontaneity and creative experimentation. Monkey resonates with the zodiac sign of Leo—affirming that charisma, charm, and playful enthusiasm will support the shifty, stimulating environments and relations this year.
The Fire Monkey confirms what we explored in the previous newsletter—the shapeshifting and adaptability needed with 2016’s mutable square and with the numerology of the 9 year—the more that we hold on, attach, and affix, especially to the past, the more we will likely suffer It’s like we’re all suspended from precarious branches over a huge campfire—we can take the leap to another tree, clap our monkey hands, and entertain and laugh with each other, even if we slip on the next branch. Or we can burn our tails from hanging on too tight.
We all know that the monkey is a fickle animal, easily distracted, and this energy is true in relationship as well, as romance and generosity are potential allies, as long as we don’t get overwhelmed and irritated with our “monkey mind” and the silly games it can play.
Fearless, uninhibited self-expression can create inspiring leaders this year, especially when we follow our passion with determined strength and dynamic passion—the invitation of the Fire element. We all benefit from how use our mental alertness, cunning, and clever engagement with new technologies as well as our physical hands to continue to learn, adapt, evolve, and heal.
